3 Malaysians killed in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Police and villagers in the rugged mountain terrain of Leh in the Kashmir region are continuing their search for Cheong Swee Chun, who went missing after a road accident that also claimed the lives of three other Malaysians.
In the Tuesday morning accident, their four-wheel-drive vehicle was said to have hit a rock and plunged about 70m into the fast-flowing waters of the Indus River in Leh, located in the Ladakh district.

While the bodies of the three victims were recovered immediately, the body of Swee Chun, 42, could not be found due to the strong currents.

"About 50 people are involved in the search. If the water level subsides, we may get some clues," Leh police spokesman Mehraj Khalid said.

Meanwhile, the bodies of Tan Gua Gnoh, 54, (from Penang), Lee Ah Yem, 59, (Kelantan) and Ang Ee Lee, 52, (Kedah) have been flown from Leh Airport, the only airstrip in Ladakh, to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Ladakh is situated in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and is about 900km from here.

But another Malaysian, 47-year-old Lin Bee Wong who was seriously injured in the accident, could not board the flight due to back injuries. However, she is in stable condition.

A convoy of nine vehicles with 30 people was believed to be heading to a Buddhist monastery to meet the chief monk when the accident occurred. -- Bernama
