KUALA LUMPUR: Local transmission of the influenza A (H1N1) virus in the country is still very active with 324 people with influenza-like illness (ILI) warded in hospitals nationwide yesterday.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said this brought the total number of people with ILI to 1,446 at 98 hospitals, including two private hospitals.
Of the number, 217 had been confirmed positive for the H1N1 virus.
Of these cases, 51, including six children and babies were being treated in intensive care units, with 39 suffering from underlying health conditions.
Malaysia also recorded another death, bringing the total number of deaths so far to 71.
The latest victim is a 24-year-old woman suffering from obesity who had fever, cough and headache on Aug 8 and was admitted to a private hospital in Kuantan, Pahang, on Aug 10 for viral pneumonitis.
On Aug 12, she was transferred to a government hospital when her condition worsened.
She was confirmed positive for H1N1 on Aug 17 and received treatment. However, she died on Aug 19.
The World Health Organisation has recorded 239,985 confirmed cases of H1N1 worldwide as of yesterday with 2,601 deaths in 182 countries.
H1N1 symptoms are similar to that of regular flu such as fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, headache, chills and fatigue.
In severe cases, diarrhoea and vomitting with pneumonia and respiratory failure have also been reported.
